Vietnam - Nguyen Hong Quang

Arrested: June 2004

I am Pastor Nguyen Hong Quang. I have been General Secretary of the Vietnam Mennonite Church since July 2003. I also serve as chairman of the Vietnam Evangelical Fellowship, which is a legal entity. Though I am a trained lawyer, I cannot get a license to practice law because I am not a member of the Communist Party.

In December, 2003, I had called for the release of persons who had been imprisoned for handing out Christian literature in Ho Chi Minh City. I guess the authorities did not like that.

On June 8, 2004 I was arrested while working in my field outside Ho Chi Minh City and charged with "interfering with officials carrying out their duties."

Later the police came and raided my house, detained my wife and three young children, and confiscated all my money, computers and files that I had gathered detailing human rights violations committed by the government.

On November 12, 2004, I was sentenced to three years in prison. While I was in prison, in July this year some 200 officials came and destroyed the rear portion of my two-story house. It was also the head office of the Mennonite Church in HoChi Minh City.

Finally, on August 30, 2005, I was released. Pray for other Christians in prison in our country. Some have had their houses burned to the ground just because they are Christians. Vietnamese officials think Christianity is an enemy religion. Pray that God will open their eyes.
