Our Mission and Purpose
Dr. John Lindner, founder and president, spent 25 years editing and publishing a magazine for Christian Aid, 1979-2004. During that time he met scores of indigenous mission leaders and their ministries from Africa and around the world. This led him to write his first book of mission biographies, God’s Special Agents, published by Christian Aid in 2003.
He felt most Americans did not have comprehension of the heroic and effective work of these indigenous mission leaders. He also felt his existing position did not allow him to publish the human side of their stories, telling their passion, struggles and victories in a way that would stir the hearts of readers.
So in January 2004 he resigned from Christian Aid to form World Christian Ministries. The goal at that time was to republish a new version of World Christian magazine, last published by WIN Press in 2002. The rebirthed magazine would have a focus on indigenous missions, lacking in the original versions. U.K. based World In Need International, owners of the title, gave us permission to use that title, so we called our ministry World Christian Ministries. WCM registered with the IRS and obtained its 503(c)(3) status effective from September 16, 2004. Copies of our bylaws are available on request. Our Board of Directors and Advisory Council are listed on our website – www.WorldChristianMinistries.org.
Next, a business study by Erasmus, Inc., helped us develop a business plan and showed that a minimum of $500,000 was required to see us through the first two years. We drew up a prototype of the magazine, but did not have the funds necessary to start. We were not able to make contact with anyone who might help fund us, and could not find any magazine publisher that was interested in taking World Christian on as a project. So we decided to begin immediately sending out an e-mail newsletter. Subscription is free; sign up here.
Our mission remains the same: to highlight the work of indigenous missions working in the Majority World (formerly called Third World or Two-Thirds World). Had we produced a print magazine, its circulation would have been limited mainly to the U.S. and Canada. By sending an e-mail newsletter, we now reach around the world. Some 60% of our readers are from the USA, with the remaining 40% from overseas. Many mission leaders from Asia, Africa and elsewhere have written to tell us what a blessing our website and newsletters are to them. Communication in less developed countries is often sketchy, at best, and some Christian leaders have even thanked us for informing us of events within their country.
We believe most Westerners still are unaware of the exploits of these little-known heroes of the faith. We delight in providing insider details to these heroic men and women of God. We sense that publishing such stories will encourage the hearts of believers, inspire greater faith, motivate them to prayer, and encourage them to invest heartily and wisely in missions to complete the task of taking the gospel to every creature.
While our operating costs are relatively low, these currently are supplied by performing editorial services, with the compensation going directly to WCM. Very few donations are received from subscribers, and many people requesting a copy of our books say they are not able to make a donation. We send them a copy of the book, anyway. With greater support we believe we would be able to hire assistant research and editorial staff, and expand our circulation and exposure.
Our original vision was for a print magazine. You can read more about it here.
